My Story

Going to Alaska was a childhood dream for Lamar Steen from the time he was 5 years old.

The only thing I can remember about the circumstances is that someone in our family had apparently died. There was an older man, who was introduced as my “great uncle”. He talked about his travels around the world, including the Orient, Australia, Africa, South America, and Alaska during the gold rush.

I was mesmerized by his tales of his adventures in Alaska. He told awe-inspiring stories about the frontier life and the beauty of Alaska. He told stories about hiking and prospecting in the wilderness, and how he survived living off the land. His descriptions of the beautiful clear, cold mountain lakes, rivers, and streams, the majestic snow covered mountains, including the mighty Mount McKinley(Denali to Alaska natives), the wildlife including Moose, caribou, grizzly bears, Dall sheep, mountain goats, wolverine, Wolves, and the abundance of snowshoe hares, and Willow ptarmigan mesmerized me. Then he described in vivid details the wildlife, the beauty, and the many human characters he encountered along the way.

At that moment the Dream of My Great Alaska Adventure burned itself into my mind. I knew it would be my destiny to someday experience Alaska up close and personal.

Unfortunately, most people only dream their dreams, but never get to live them.

I decided I would actually live my dream.

Finally in 1969, at 24 years of age, I started the trek to fulfill that dream. My Great Alaska Adventure was everything I dreamed and more than I ever expected.

The grandeur and magnificence of this awesome land can only be lived through someone who has the passion and understanding of its nature and people.

Let me share that experience with you including many things about Alaska that most people never get to see or even know about. If you are ever planning to visit Alaska or simply interested, you will want to read and view the many stories, photos, and videos I will be posting.

Now I will share my Great Alaska Adventure story with you.
